Court sentences two internet fraudsters in Kaduna

Justice R.M. Aikawa of Kaduna’s Federal High Court convicted Samuel Ezekiel Godfrey and Yahaya Mustapha for cybercrimes following their prosecution by the EFCC. The duo faced separate charges including criminal impersonation and money laundering through fraudulent online activities.
Godfrey, who posed as “Dixon Kelvin” on Facebook, scammed victims of ₦191,580, violating Section 22(2)(b)(i) of the Cybercrimes Act. Meanwhile, Mustapha impersonated “Mike Benjamin,” a fake U.S. citizen, to defraud victims of $100 using the same platform. Both defendants admitted guilt during court proceedings.
Prosecutor M.U. Gadaka pushed for strict sentencing, while defense lawyers pleaded for leniency, citing remorse. Justice Aikawa imposed a two-year jail term or ₦500,000 fine on Godfrey, alongside forfeiting his illicit gains and iPhone. Mustapha received five years imprisonment or a ₦300,000 fine, with restitution of $100 and surrender of his iPhone 14 Pro.
Authorities arrested the pair in Niger State’s Bida LGA after intelligence exposed their schemes.
The court ruling highlights the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on cybercriminals exploiting digital platforms.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians from online fraud through rigorous prosecutions.
As cybercrimes escalate nationwide, the judgment serves as a deterrent while underscoring the judiciary’s role in upholding accountability. Victims and activists have welcomed the verdict, urging sustained enforcement to curb internet-enabled financial crimes across Nigeria.
