Dangerous animals, including crocodiles and snakes, have reportedly taken over parts of the Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State following a devastating flood that recently struck the metropolis.
Areas such as Post Office and Monday Market, which are near the Shehu Kyarimi Park Zoo, are among the worst affected.
In addition to the animal invasion, key locations including the Shehu’s palace, the University of Maiduguri, its Teaching Hospital, Gwange, Moromoro, State Lowcost, 500 Abbagana Housing Estate, and the popular Monday Market have been submerged.
Lagos Street, the NUJ Centre, and even the Government House were not spared by the flood, which has displaced millions of residents and destroyed property worth billions of naira.
Also, thousands of people were seen evacuating their belongings to safer areas like Bulumkutu, Gomari Airport, and Tashan Baga.
Many of the victims have pleaded for immediate government intervention, as unconfirmed reports suggest that lives have been lost in the ongoing disaster.
But unfortunately, the incident coincides with the absence of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who is currently out of the country, while his Deputy, Umar Kadafur, is on annual leave.
The absence of the state’s top officials has raised concerns among the affected communities.
However, in response to the crisis, the Borno State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant.
The spokesman of the command, ASP Kenneth Daso, assured the public that the police and other relevant agencies are working to safeguard lives and property during this critical period.
The situation remains dire, and urgent action is needed to mitigate further loss and ensure the safety of the displaced residents.
