CSU: Group warns against FG’s plot to influence the media monetarily

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has expressed grave concern over recent revelations that suggest a dangerous encroachment of governmental influence and financial inducements within the Nigerian media landscape.

The group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said it has been made aware of alarming reports and messages indicating that substantial sums of money have been allocated for purposes that threaten the integrity and impartiality of the media in Nigeria.

The implications of these alleged actions according to Onwubiko are deeply troubling and have the potential to undermine the foundations of democracy.

He said, “The allocation of a significant amount of N5 billion for the purchase of interview airtime across mainstream TV stations, aggressive media campaigns in specific regions, and engagement with influential community figures raises serious questions about the independence and objectivity of media outlets.

“The Civil Rights group firmly believes that a free and unbiased media is essential for the functioning of any democratic society. Journalists and media organizations play a critical role in holding those in power accountable, providing information to the public, and fostering transparency in governance.

“The alleged attempts to influence the media’s narrative, tarnish the reputation of political opponents, and downplay critical issues are deeply concerning. Such actions threaten the principles of transparency, fairness, and accountability that are vital to a thriving democracy.

“It is essential to remember that an independent media serves as a check and balance against any potential abuse of power by the government or any political entity. The media’s primary responsibility is to provide the public with accurate and impartial information to make informed decisions.

“We call upon all media organizations and professionals to uphold their ethical and moral obligations to the Nigerian people. The media must remain true to its mission of providing objective and unbiased reporting, free from undue influence or pressure from any source.

“Furthermore, we urge the Nigerian public to remain vigilant and demand transparency and accountability from their media outlets. Democracy thrives when the media operates without fear or favor and upholds its duty to the people.

According to Onwubiko, HURIWA will continue to monitor developments closely and will not hesitate to take appropriate actions to protect the democratic values and principles that are the foundation of the nation.

“We call on all Nigerians to stand together to safeguard the independence and integrity of our media, for it is through a free and responsible press that we can ensure a just and prosperous future for our beloved nation”.
