David Silva has stunned the football world by coming out of retirement at the age of 40 to return to professional football with Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin.
The former Manchester City and Spain midfielder ended his playing career in 2023 after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season with Real Sociedad.
More than three years later, Silva is ready to put his boots back on and begin an unexpected new chapter in a career that had already established him as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation.
Sha Tin confirmed the signing on Wednesday, announcing that the Spanish World Cup winner would join the club as it continues its first season in the Hong Kong top flight after securing promotion.
Silva will not immediately be thrown into competitive action.
The club said he would first settle into his new surroundings, link up with his teammates in training and work towards regaining the fitness required to compete at the highest level.
His potential debut could come on October 18 against Hong Kong Football Club, although his availability will depend on how quickly he reaches the required fitness level.
Silva has already expressed his excitement about the unusual opportunity.
The former City playmaker said he was looking forward to experiencing Hong Kong, its culture and food while returning to the football pitch.
The move represents a dramatic change from the surroundings in which Silva spent most of his career.
He became a Manchester City icon during a decade at the Etihad Stadium between 2010 and 2020, helping transform the club into one of the dominant forces in English football.
Silva made 309 Premier League appearances for City, scoring 60 goals and providing 93 assists. He won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups and two Community Shields during his time with the club.
His influence went beyond the numbers.
Known for his close control, vision, passing ability and intelligence between the lines, Silva became one of the creative forces behind City’s rise under managers including Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola.
He left Manchester in 2020 after helping City win another Premier League title and moved to Real Sociedad.
His time in Spain ended in painful circumstances.
Silva suffered an ACL injury during pre-season in 2023, and the severity of the injury eventually led him to announce his retirement at 37.
At the time, it appeared the final chapter had been written.
Instead, three years later, Silva has decided to return.
His international career was equally impressive.
Silva was an important member of Spain’s golden generation, winning the European Championship in 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and another European Championship in 2012.
He finished his international career with 125 appearances and 35 goals for Spain.
His decision to return at 40 therefore has little to do with proving that he still has something to achieve.
He has already won almost everything available to a footballer.
Instead, the move appears to offer Silva an opportunity to experience the game again without the enormous pressure that accompanied his years at the top of European football.
For Sha Tin, meanwhile, the signing represents one of the most significant acquisitions in the club’s history.
The newly promoted side currently sit eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches and will hope Silva’s experience can provide an important boost as the season progresses.
His arrival is also likely to generate enormous interest around the Hong Kong league, with supporters now waiting to see whether the former City star can translate his experience and football intelligence into performances on the pitch.
There is, however, an obvious question surrounding the comeback.
Can a 40-year-old midfielder who has spent more than three years away from competitive football still operate at the required level?
That answer will only become clear once Silva begins playing.
The club has already indicated that he needs time to regain match fitness, suggesting that expectations will be managed rather than placing immediate pressure on him.
For now, the biggest story is simply that Silva is playing football again.
From winning the World Cup with Spain and four Premier League titles with Manchester City to receiving a statue outside the Etihad Stadium, Silva’s career already belongs among the game’s elite.
Now, at an age when most former professionals have long settled into retirement, the Spanish maestro is preparing for one more adventure.
And this time, the destination is Hong Kong.
