Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped four places to 30th in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking following a difficult international window that produced mixed results for Eric Chelle’s side.

The new ranking, released on Wednesday, October 7, saw Nigeria fall from 26th position globally and drop from fourth to sixth among African nations. The decline came after the Super Eagles recorded one victory, one defeat and one draw during their latest international engagements.

Nigeria began the period on a positive note with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture in Uyo.

The Super Eagles, however, failed to maintain that momentum in their second qualifier, suffering a damaging 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau. The result cost Nigeria valuable ranking points and allowed two African rivals, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire, to move above them in the continental standings.

Nigeria then returned to action against Russia in an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday. The encounter produced an entertaining 3-3 draw, giving Chelle’s team an opportunity to end the international window on a more encouraging note.

However, the draw was not enough to completely recover the ground lost after the defeat to Guinea-Bissau, leaving Nigeria 30th in the latest global ranking with 1,567.97 points.

The movement also changed Nigeria’s position within Africa.

Morocco remained the continent’s highest-ranked team and climbed to seventh in the world. Senegal followed in second place in Africa and 18th globally, while Egypt occupied third position at 25th in the world.

Algeria moved into fourth place in Africa and 28th globally, with Côte d’Ivoire now fifth on the continent and 29th in the world.

Nigeria completed the African top six.

The latest continental order means the Super Eagles now sit ahead of DR Congo, Cameroon, Mali and South Africa among Africa’s leading sides. South Africa are ranked 48th globally, while DR Congo, Cameroon and Mali occupy 40th, 43rd and 47th positions respectively.

For Nigeria, the latest decline highlighted the consequences of inconsistent results during a competitive period.

The victory over Madagascar initially offered the Super Eagles a strong start to their AFCON qualifying campaign, but the heavy defeat in Guinea-Bissau proved costly. Although the 3-3 draw with Russia provided some attacking encouragement, Nigeria could not fully repair the damage caused by the earlier loss.

The ranking also underlined the increasingly competitive nature of African football, with five nations now positioned ahead of Nigeria globally.

At the top of the world ranking, Spain retained first place with 2,011.57 points. Argentina remained second, while France and England occupied third and fourth positions respectively. Portugal moved up to fifth, followed by Brazil in sixth and Morocco in seventh.

Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico completed the global top 10.

Nigeria’s latest position will put additional importance on the results of its upcoming competitive fixtures. The Super Eagles will need greater consistency, particularly in AFCON qualifying matches, if they are to recover lost ground and climb back into Africa’s top five.

The next FIFA men’s world ranking is scheduled to be released after the November international window, giving Chelle and his players another opportunity to improve Nigeria’s position.

For a team with ambitions of returning to the top level of African football, the message from the latest ranking is clear: positive results must become more consistent.
