Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared a surprising behind-the-scenes story about his iconic 2014 hit “Aye,” revealing how a last-minute change led to one of the most memorable music videos in Nigerian pop culture.
Speaking during a chat with Capital XTRA, Davido explained that the original lead actress for the video had to pull out unexpectedly due to a pageant contract issue just as filming was about to begin.
According to him, the production was already set in a remote bush location, making it impossible to reschedule the shoot. With time running out, the team had to think fast and that’s when they made an unexpected decision.
They cast the actress’s makeup artist as the lead.
What seemed like a risky, last-minute choice turned out to be a stroke of luck. The “Aye” video went on to become a massive success, racking up over 111 million views on YouTube and cementing its place as a timeless love anthem from Davido’s debut album Omo Baba Olowo.
Davido also revealed that the original actress later regretted missing out on the opportunity, especially after seeing how successful the video became.
Fans have since revisited the nostalgic visuals, celebrating the chemistry and simplicity of the rural love story proving that sometimes, unexpected moments create the most iconic outcomes.
