In a bid to enhance the capacity of journalists and media practitioners in Nigeria, the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) and Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) recently organized a two-week leadership and digital media training in Awka, Anambra State. The training, which commenced on November 25, 2024, and would end on December 6, 2024, brought together over 40 participants from across the country.
The training was to equip journalists and media practitioners with the skills and knowledge required to effectively report on critical issues affecting the country, particularly in the lead-up to the general elections. Participants were taken through a series of lectures and interactive sessions on leadership, digital media, and journalism.
According to Hon. Kayode James from Bauchi, who participated in the training, the program was “highly impactful” and marked the beginning of a new era for Nigeria. Other participants, including Mary Igwenomeh from Ebonyi State and Gerry Okechukwu from Lagos State, expressed their enthusiasm for the training, which they said had transformed their perspective on the role of journalists in shaping the country’s future.
The training was facilitated by seasoned professionals in journalism, leadership, and digital media, including Kaneng Rwang PAM from Plateau State and Mr. Tony Elomonu from Delta State. The facilitators were praised for their expertise and dedication to imparting knowledge.
The training organized by DDM/COPDEM is timely and relevant, given the critical role that journalists and media practitioners play in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable. With the increasing importance of digital media in modern journalism, it is essential that journalists and COPDEM media practitioners have the skills and knowledge required to effectively utilize digital media platforms.
The training also emphasized the importance of leadership in journalism, highlighting the need for journalists and media practitioners to demonstrate leadership skills in their reporting and storytelling.

The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) is inviting individuals to join its movement to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
