Deadly Car Explosion Kills 10 in India

The Indian capital is on high alert after an explosion that tore through a neighborhood in the area near the Red Fort injured more than 30 people and claimed the lives of 10 others on Monday.

The attack took place close to the historic landmark that dates to the 17th century and is one of India’s most popular sites to visit and represents India’s independence.

Markets that are normally full of vendors and people became chaotic with reports indicating cars burnt and fire illuminated the skies.

Footage captured in the area revealed cars that had been heavily damaged and desperate residents who had come to assist injured people.

A resident who had managed to witness the accident narrated that one male had heavily bled from the forehead.

The Delhi Police reported that an ‘slow-moving’ vehicle was halted by a red light at 6:42 p.m. before it exploded. At least six cars and three auto-rickshaws had been affected by the attack.

The rescue team reached the location after receiving an emergency call within minutes at 6:55 p.m. to douse the fire and take injured passengers to nearby hospitals.

The case is being probed by the concerned officials under the anti-terror laws in India, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha has confirmed.

The reason behind the blast has still not been ascertained.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his condolences to the families, and Home Minister Amit Shah has visited the spot and met with injured victims in the hospital.

Modi also stated that the concerned security agencies are probing the case with utmost fervor.

The event has led to increased security in India. Airports, rail stations, government offices, and monuments are on alert.

Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are other states that have taken increased measures to ensure security.

People are encouraged to stay calm and be vigilant in case they notice anything suspicious.

Red Fort was constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan and marks historic importance as the venue where Indian Prime Ministers present Independence Day addresses to the nation.

Although bombings are uncommon in Delhi, there have been serious bombings in the past such as the attack on parliament in 2001 and the 2011 briefcase bomb blast near the High Court.

Investigations are still ongoing to establish the causes behind the blast with various investigative bodies such as the National Investigation Agency and National Security Guard present on the ground.
