Defection: Kano Assembly backs Gov Yusuf, gives reason

The Kano State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s proposed defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the party’s persistent leadership disputes and multiple court cases as threats to his mandate.

Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini stated that staying in the NNPP is increasingly risky for Yusuf and other elected officials, given the party’s factional struggles and litigation uncertainties.

Hussaini warned that remaining in the NNPP could lead to a repeat of the Zamfara State scenario, where the APC lost electoral victories due to internal disputes.

The Assembly is consulting with Yusuf and Kwankwasiyya leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to facilitate a “strategic and timely” exit, potentially to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso has cautioned defectors, insisting they must account for the support invested in them before leaving.

He noted that political defections rarely happen without incentives, saying, “For someone to abandon his house and go elsewhere, it does not just happen without reason”.
