Deji Adeyanju, a prominent human rights activist, asserts that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is specifically targeting Omoyele Sowore.
This targeting stems from Sowore’s vocal criticism of Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP).
On Monday, Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), arrived at the police headquarters in Abuja.
He did so after receiving a summons from the authorities.
The police summoned Sowore to answer allegations of cyberstalking, negligent behavior, and intimidation.
This invitation stemmed from a viral video where Sowore confronted officers who had stopped his vehicle at a Lagos checkpoint.
In response to the police invitation, Sowore rejected the bail conditions imposed, which required him to surrender his international passport and present a level 17 civil servant as a guarantor.
Deji Adeyanju, one of Sowore’s lawyers, informed journalists that the police imposed “outrageous and charade” bail conditions for the activist.
Furthermore, he criticized the police for neglecting serious issues while fixating on trivial matters.
“I’m witnessing a situation where Omoyele Sowore is persecuted by Egbetokun-led police,” he stated.
Sowore has openly criticized the IGP for overstaying his term, labeling him an illegal IGP.
The IGP appears to view this as an opportunity to target Sowore, who remains undeterred by the police’s intimidation tactics.
“We interviewed them; however, they refuse to release him on self-recognition and instead issued outrageous bail conditions,” he added.
