Dele Momodu slams Wike’s growing influence in Tinubu’s Govt, fears democratic decline

Renowned publisher and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu has raised alarms over the expanding role of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in President Bola Tinubu’s administration. According to Momodu, Nigeria now seems to function under a dual presidency, with Wike wielding unprecedented political power.
During an appearance on *Channels Television’s The Morning Brief* on Wednesday, Momodu stated, “Right now, it appears we have two presidents. Wike acts without restraint.” He further noted that even Tinubu, a seasoned political strategist since 1999, has never displayed such boldness in governance.
Momodu’s criticism followed Tuesday’s reopening of the renovated International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, renamed after Tinubu. While the president praised Wike’s efforts and dismissed critics as “busybodies,” Momodu challenged this rhetoric. “Calling citizens ‘busybodies’ is unacceptable. No Nigerian should be sidelined in their own country,” he argued.
Additionally, Momodu questioned the reported ₦30 billion spent on the ICC renovation. He observed the audience’s stunned reactions as Wike celebrated during the event. “People seemed confused, wondering what Nigeria is becoming,” he remarked.
Wike’s Political Dominance Sparks Backlash
Momodu accused the APC-led government of emboldening Wike, comparing his current influence to his controversial tenure as Rivers State governor. “His actions today mirror his past tactics—backed by those in power,” Momodu asserted. He referenced the political turmoil in Rivers, where Wike’s refusal to yield control once triggered a crisis.
Despite being a PDP member, Wike backed Tinubu in the 2023 elections and later joined the APC cabinet. Momodu condemned Wike’s recent demand for the PDP to zone its 2027 ticket to the South. “Who is he to impose such conditions? This is a coup against the party that built him,” Momodu declared.
PDP in Disarray as Defections Continue
The PDP has faced internal strife since losing the 2023 election, with numerous members defecting to the APC. When asked if he would follow suit, Momodu refused. “If I wanted to join the APC, I wouldn’t be speaking out. I won’t tolerate one man dictating to lifelong politicians,” he said.
Nigeria Drifting Toward Civilian Dictatorship
As Nigeria nears 26 years of democracy, Momodu warned of rising authoritarianism. “We’re sliding into civilian dictatorship, where leaders ignore public suffering,” he lamented. He honored June 12 democracy activists, grieving that their sacrifices are being betrayed.
Momodu’s stark remarks highlight urgent concerns about Nigeria’s democratic health. With political tensions and economic struggles worsening, his call for accountability resonates as a crucial plea for reform.
