(DDM) – The 9th National Youth Games have officially commenced in Asaba, drawing young athletes from all 36 states of Nigeria to compete in the Under-15 sporting fiesta.
The event, which runs from August 26 to September 7 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, marks a major opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars.
Delta State, hosting the National Youth Games for the third time, has promised a well-organized tournament aimed at promoting unity, discipline, and sporting excellence among the country’s young athletes.
Festus Owhojero, a member of the Local Organising Committee, assured that all facilities are fully prepared to host athletes, coaches, and officials.
He expressed optimism about Team Delta’s performance and encouraged fair competition across all participating states.
According to event organizers, the games will feature a wide range of sporting disciplines including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, swimming, and martial arts.
These competitions aim to identify and nurture young talents who can represent Nigeria at national and international levels in the future.
The National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, will declare the games open on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during Friday’s opening ceremony, which is expected to be a colourful and vibrant celebration of sport and Nigerian culture.

Local communities in Asaba and nearby areas have mobilized to support the games, providing accommodation, transportation, and hospitality services for participants, officials, and spectators.
The Delta State government has leveraged the games to enhance local infrastructure, including upgrades to the stadium facilities, access roads, and surrounding amenities.
Officials believe that this investment will create a lasting legacy beyond the conclusion of the tournament.
The games are also being used as a platform to educate young athletes on discipline, teamwork, and the importance of sports in personal development and national unity.
Coaches and mentors will conduct workshops and training sessions to further support participants’ growth.
