Dikko: “My top goal is to develop viable sports economy”

The newly appointed chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko has emphasized that his top goal is establishing a robust and profitable sports economy for the nation.

Dikko revealed this information in a formal statement on Wednesday in Abuja, during the official handover ceremony of John Enoh, the former Minister of Sports Development, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium office.

The new chairman stressed that his focus extends beyond short-term successes or mere medal accumulation, instead prioritizing sustainable growth and advancement of Nigeria’s sports sector.

“The Nigerian sports community must undergo a paradigm shift, changing from an exclusive focus on competition and winning medals to a holistic emphasis on sports development,” Dikko stated.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision is to unlock the vast potential of Nigeria’s sports economy.”

“To achieve this, there’s a pressing need to shift focus from solely competing and winning medals to revitalizing domestic sports development.”

According to Dikko, the strategic move will enable Nigeria to build a robust sports ecosystem, fostering growth and excellence beyond mere medal counts.

“Building a strong foundation is paramount. When we do so, medal victories and remarkable outcomes will naturally follow, driven by a mindset prioritizing sustainable development and lasting impact.”

According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), Dikko stated that he is committed to establishing sports as a key economic sector, aiming to increase its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP to at least 3% over the next four years.

“The President’s vision is to establish sports as a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economy, aiming for a minimum 3% contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

“The goal is achievable, considering that sports already account for 2.12% of the EU’s GDP, with countries like Austria, Germany, Poland, and France benefiting substantially from the industry,” Dikko asserted.

“Our objective is to measure the sports sector’s contribution to employment and its economic value chain over the next four to five years, alongside evaluating Nigeria’s performance in global tournaments.”

PremiumTimes reported that Dikko unveiled a three-pillar strategy for Nigeria’s sports development, emphasizing a robust legal framework, world-class infrastructure, and economic growth through sports.

“Our administration aims to position sports as a driving force for national growth, economic development, and social cohesion, aligning with global best practices in sports management.”

”Furthermore, it is important that we prioritize the development of comprehensive legislation and regulatory frameworks to establish a conducive environment for the sports industry’s optimal growth.”

“The strategic step will provide the necessary foundation for the sector’s expansion,” Dikko emphasized.

”The other pillar is investing in purposeful, world-class infrastructure that will provide an enabling environment for growth,” he added.

Dikko appealed to all stakeholders to rally behind the new NSC in its quest to revolutionize sports development in Nigeria.

Earlier on October 23, President Tinubu appointed Dikko as the new Chairman of the National Sports Commission.

Following the President’s directive, the Ministry of Sports Development was disbanded, and its responsibilities were reassigned to the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Shehu Dikko is a Nigerian sports administrator, football executive, and businessman.

Early Life and Education of Dikko

Dikko was born in Kaduna State, Nigeria. He had his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and his Master’s degree in Business Administration in the University of Lagos.

Career

He was the 2nd vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Also, he was the Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC), overseeing the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

The sport administrator was an executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He is the managing director of Media and Management Company.

Achievements

The sportsman successfully rebranded the Nigerian top-flight league, increasing its visibility and attractiveness. He secured broadcast partnerships with Supersport and other networks.

Besides, Dikko attracted significant sponsorship deals for the NPFL, implemented programs to develop grassroots football, and improved stadium infrastructure and facilities.

Also, he contributed to Nigeria’s national team successes, including AFCON and World Cup qualifications.

Controversies and Challenges

The Kaduna born was involved in leadership disputes within the NFF, faced allegations of financial mismanagement, which he denied, and faced challenges in maintaining a consistent league.
