The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has urged Nigerians to view taxes as a foundation for national development rather than a punishment.
FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji stressed that taxes fund essential public services like hospitals, roads, schools, and social services, directly impacting citizens’ lives.
He encouraged a culture of voluntary tax compliance, where citizens fulfill their civic duty due to trust in the system and awareness of its benefits.
Adedeji highlighted that taxes are crucial for funding public services and driving national growth.
He stressed the importance of building trust and accountability to encourage voluntary tax compliance, rather than relying solely on enforcement and penalties.
Adedeji praised the media for its role in educating the public, simplifying complex tax laws, and promoting transparency and accountability.
Dr. Mohammed Adamu noted that voluntary tax compliance reduces enforcement costs, builds trust between government and taxpayers, ensures steady revenue flow, and fosters patriotism.
Adamu identified fairness in tax administration, taxpayer education, transparency, and accountability as essential drivers of voluntary compliance.
Ishaku Ankuma emphasized the importance of taxpayer education, automation of tax processes, and initiatives like “Catch Them Young” programs in schools to build a tax culture early.
The FIRS charged journalists to help demystify taxation, highlight its benefits, expose tax evasion, and shape public perception in favor of building a culture of compliance.
