Former President Goodluck Jonathan

There was drama in court yesterday as the embattled former National Publicity Secretary [NPS] of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], Mr Olisa Metuh interjected in proceedings and overruled his counsel on the issue involving former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr Metuh said that he wants no legal altercations with President Jonathan and that he respects Jonathan’s position.

Metuh said that he is in court, not to indict the former number one citizen, but to prove his innocence, not to drag him down.

Earlier, Jonathan, through his counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, held that Metuh is being unfairly treated after serving the nation meritoriously.

He held that Dasuki in his dealings with Metuh acted competently and in the best interest of the nation.

Reacting to the development, a political observer, Mr Ikechukwu Emeka Onyia said:

“Is it not better we let an innocent man go? Why pursuing a man just because he was [Publicity Secretary] of Opposing party?

“Anytime I attend this case right from onset, I always see a deliberate attempt by our government to ridicule one of the nation’s finest.

“It does not matter anyone’s opinion on the person of Metuh.

“One thing is that the government of today is putting all energy needed for growth of our economy and development of our country in their move to jail a man that has NEVER held government position!

“Metuh is never the problem of this nation in anyway.

“Let him go and pay him damages for messing up his image,” he concluded.

Elombah.com had reported that the former had filed an application before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, asking for an order of court to wholly set aside the issuance and service of the subpoena ad testificandum issued on him by the court on October 23, 2017.

The subpoena was to compel him to appear in court to give evidence in proceedings of a charge delineated FHC/ABJ/ CR/05/2016.

The suit was filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Olisa Metuh and Destra Investment Limited with a seven-count criminal charge.

Jonathan further asked in the alternative for an order mandating Olisa Metuh to deposit the sum of one billion naira with the court in line with the provisions of Section 241 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

The one billion Naira, according to him, is to cover his travel expenses and that of his security personnel from Otuoke to Abuja and for logistics.

It will also serve to provide tight security to cover the period of time he might spend appearing before the court as former President and any other order the court may deem fit.
