The Department of State Security (DSS) has released the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, for a medical check-up with his doctors.
Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, broke the news on his social media handle, saying that the IPOB leader has finally undergone his medical examination.
The release followed a court order citing the Nigerian Constitution that the detained IPOP leader is entitled to access to his personal physicians.
Mr Ejiofor, in a statement on Saturday, said Mr Kanu underwent the medical examination in an unnamed hospital in Abuja on Friday.
“We are pleased to inform you that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met with his choice personal physician yesterday (Friday) in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the State Security Service (SSS),” he said.
“As part of the protocol, I witnessed the consultation. The medical examination was seamless and productive, and he (Kanu) will be progressing to the next stage soon,” the lawyer added.
Nnamdi Kanu, it could be recalled, is facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
He has been detained at the DSS facility since his rearrest in June 2021 when he was renditioned by the federal government of Nigerian under former President Muhammadu Buhari in collusion with the Kenyan government.
The move has been hotly debated and condemned by the international community and declared illegal by a Nigerian court which ordered the Nigerian government to pay release him with immediate effect and to pay him compensation of one billion Naira in damages. Read more.
