Edo Gov suspends traditional ruler over kidnapping

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday April 22, suspended the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Dr. George Egabor, indefinitely.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Governor Okpebholo took the decision after security reports linked palace figures to criminal activities.
The suspension follows rising cases of kidnapping and killings in the monarch’s domain, located in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the monarch’s secretary, Chief Peter Omiogbemhi, has been arrested over his alleged role in a deadly incident.
The incident reportedly led to the death of a palace chief, identified as Late John Ikhamate.
The governor expressed shock at the continuous violence and insecurity in the community under the monarch’s watch.
He said the suspension is to pave way for investigation and restore peace to the troubled area.
Itua stated, “Governor Okpebholo has ordered the immediate suspension of Dr. George Egabor, Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom.”
He said Egabor’s indefinite suspension follows the recent killing and abduction incidents around Agenebode.
Security agencies are already investigating the circumstances surrounding the violence and the role of palace officials.
Residents of the area have lived in fear following a spate of criminal attacks.
Recall that on March 3, 2025, suspected kidnappers abducted a Catholic priest, Philip Ekeli, and a seminarian, Peter Andrew.
The abduction occurred around 11:30pm at St. Peter Catholic Church in Iviukwa, near Agenebode.
While Fr. Ekeli regained freedom, the seminarian was reportedly killed by the abductors.
The tragic incident sparked outrage in the community and heightened calls for urgent government action.
Security sources confirmed that intelligence gathered pointed to complicity among insiders in the palace.
Okpebholo assured residents that the government would not tolerate threats to peace and human lives.
He urged traditional rulers to support security efforts or face strict consequences.
