Edo State celebrates 34 years of unity, culture, and progress

(DDM) – Edo State has marked its 34th anniversary with a call for unity, renewed commitment to development, and a celebration of its rich cultural heritage.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the commemoration was not only a date on the calendar but also an opportunity to reflect on the state’s historical journey and envision its future.

From Benin Kingdom to modern Edo

Edo State was created on August 27, 1991, following the split of the former Bendel State into Edo and Delta States.

The state’s roots, however, trace back to the ancient Benin Kingdom, renowned globally for its artistic treasures, sophisticated governance, and historical resilience.

This cultural heritage remains a source of inspiration for modern Edo, positioning it as a centre of pride and potential in Nigeria’s federation.

Governor’s message of hope and progress

In his anniversary address, the Governor emphasised that the 34th milestone symbolises growth and collective achievement rather than merely the passage of time.

He stated that the legacy of art, culture, and governance handed down through generations continues to shape Edo’s identity and aspirations.

The Governor called on all Edo sons and daughters, at home and abroad, to join his administration in building a prosperous future grounded in unity and shared vision.

Economic and infrastructural milestones

Since its creation, Edo State has evolved into a hub for commerce, agriculture, and education in Southern Nigeria.

Key infrastructure projects over the years have transformed the state’s urban landscape, with road networks, industrial parks, and educational institutions driving economic growth.

The current administration’s Project SHINE has intensified these efforts, targeting sustainable urban renewal, improved healthcare systems, and expanded access to quality education.

Cultural preservation and tourism potential

Edo’s cultural heritage continues to attract global recognition.

The planned return of stolen Benin artefacts from European museums has further placed the state in the spotlight as a centre for cultural revival and tourism.

Experts believe this could boost the state’s economy, creating jobs and fostering a renewed sense of historical pride.

Call for collective responsibility

He urged citizens to contribute through innovation, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility while supporting government initiatives aimed at sustainable development.

Renewed hope for the future

As Edo State looks ahead, the Governor expressed confidence that unity, resilience, and faith would guide its journey toward greater heights.

“Happy 34th Anniversary, Edo State. A New Edo Has Risen,” he declared, highlighting a vision anchored on inclusive growth and practical governance.
