EFCC confirms arrest of 11 suspected internet fraudsters in Niger State amid conflicting police reports

EFCC operatives arrested 11 suspected internet fraudsters in Niger State following a coordinated operation.

Subsequently, Kaduna Zonal Directorate agents raided White Hill Hotel in Chanchaga LGA, seizing devices tied to cybercrimes.

This initiative represents the agency’s latest effort to curb digital fraud. By doing so, it reinforces its commitment to combating financial crimes and ensuring citizens’ safety across the region.

The EFCC reported that the arrests stemmed from credible intelligence regarding the suspects’ alleged involvement in cyber-related crimes. Consequently, they acted swiftly to address these issues.

In a statement released on Thursday, the anti-graft agency revealed the items recovered during the operation. Notably, these included two vehicles and 13 mobile phones of various brands.

The EFCC emphasized that the arrest was conducted professionally and adhered to standard procedural guidelines.

However, a conflicting report from the Niger State Police has raised questions about the nature of the operation

A situation report from the Assistant Commissioner of Police, State Intelligence Department (Acpol SID), described an alarming incident. Specifically, unidentified armed men stormed the hotel at approximately 4:58 a.m. on February 27.

Moreover, the report alleged that the assailants claimed to be EFCC operatives. Consequently, they dismantled the hotel’s CCTV cameras and forcibly removed 10 individuals to an undisclosed location.

The police further stated that efforts are underway to identify those involved in the incident and locate the missing individuals. This account has sparked concerns over the identity of the operatives and the legitimacy of their actions.

In response to the police report, the EFCC reiterated that its operatives were responsible for the arrests and maintained that the operation was legitimate. The agency stated that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the process.
