The Federal High Court in Abuja will begin the trial of former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, on November 25, 2025.

Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the date on Thursday, July 24, following the reassignment of the case.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed nine criminal charges against Obiano.

These include allegations of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and diversion of public funds.

Trial Begins Anew

The case was earlier handled by Justice Inyang Ekwo, who heard testimony from five prosecution witnesses. These included bankers and bureau de change operators.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, later reassigned the case to Justice Umar on May 8, 2025.

Because of this change, the May 26 sitting did not proceed. When the case resumed on July 24, the new judge set a fresh trial date.

Shocking Witness Revelations

A key witness, Ugochukwu Otubelu, managed the account used for Obiano’s security vote.

He said the account sent funds to six private companies.

Another witness, Ayuba Tanko, said his bureau de change received ₦416 million in multiple tranches.

His firm later converted the sum to $1.137 million for a proxy tied to Obiano.

The EFCC traced these transactions back to government accounts. The funds allegedly served personal and unauthorized purposes.

Obiano’s Time in Office

Obiano led Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022.

He left office amid rising concerns over state finances. The EFCC opened its case shortly after his tenure ended.

The agency claims it has strong documentary and financial evidence. The trial, expected to restart from scratch, may include both old and new witnesses.

What Lies Ahead

The outcome of the case could influence how Nigeria handles alleged corruption involving former governors.
