(DDM) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has carried out a surprise raid at the Green Legacy Hotel, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, arresting several suspected internet fraudsters in the early hours of Sunday.

DDM gathered that the operation, reportedly led by operatives from the EFCC’s Lagos Directorate, was executed while a pool party was ongoing at the facility.

The event, which had attracted a large crowd of young people, turned chaotic when operatives moved in and gunshots were heard, sending guests into panic and triggering a frantic stampede.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed partygoers scrambling for safety, abandoning drinks, personal items, and even vehicles in a desperate bid to escape arrest.

The EFCC operatives reportedly impounded more than 20 exotic cars along with other valuables suspected to be proceeds of cybercrime.

The Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, confirmed to journalists that EFCC operatives had indeed stormed the premises. “Yes, they did.

There was an incident this morning,” he said, noting that further clarifications on the scope of the arrests were still being gathered.

At the time of filing this report, efforts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for an official statement were unsuccessful.

However, sources within the anti-graft agency hinted that the operation was part of a coordinated crackdown on cybercrime across the South-West region.

The incident comes just days after the EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate arrested 55 suspected internet fraudsters at K Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.

In that earlier raid, several cars, laptops, and mobile devices were seized, with the suspects currently undergoing investigation.

The Green Legacy Hotel is one of the prominent hospitality arms of the OOPL, a multi-purpose presidential legacy project established by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2017.

The OOPL complex is known for its conference facilities, archives, museum, wildlife park, and leisure centres, and has previously hosted local and international dignitaries.

Cybercrime, popularly referred to in Nigeria as “Yahoo Yahoo,” remains a major challenge for law enforcement agencies.

The EFCC has intensified its operations in recent years, raiding nightclubs, hotels, and private residences where suspected fraudsters are believed to operate or socialise.

In many cases, these raids have sparked public debates over the agency’s tactics, the rights of suspects, and the need to balance security with respect for civil liberties.

The latest raid at a high-profile location such as the Obasanjo Library’s hotel signals the EFCC’s determination to send a strong message that no venue is beyond the reach of its operations.

The agency has repeatedly warned that lavish lifestyles, suspicious gatherings, and unexplained wealth will continue to attract its scrutiny.

With investigations ongoing, Nigerians will be watching to see if the arrests lead to successful prosecutions, a key measure of whether the EFCC’s aggressive approach is translating into tangible results in the fight against cybercrime.
