Egypt has sent its first batch of high-tech “mini tuber” potato seeds to Uzbekistan. This shipment marks a big step in Egypt’s goal to become a regional seed exporter.

Daily News Egypt, a TV BRICS partner, confirmed the report on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Mohamed El-Mensy, who heads the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine, shared the update. He said the Ministry of Agriculture aims to increase domestic seed production and expand exports to international markets.

Egypt Pushes Innovation in Agriculture

Egyptian scientists developed the mini tuber potato seeds using advanced agricultural methods. These seeds grow quickly, resist disease, and offer higher yields. This makes them ideal for farming in dry climates like Uzbekistan’s.

El-Mensy explained that Egypt’s plant health unit prepared all technical documents for the export. These documents ensured the seeds met both Egyptian and Uzbek standards. As a result, the shipment moved forward without delays.

 Egypt and Uzbekistan Strengthen Cooperation

Egypt and Uzbekistan worked closely to finalize the deal. El-Mensy held a video meeting with Uzbekistan’s ambassador in Cairo to discuss final steps. They completed the process just in time for Uzbekistan’s planting season.

Earlier in May, a high-level Uzbek delegation visited Egypt. During their trip, they toured farms, seed labs, and agricultural research centers. Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture arranged these visits to showcase local innovations and support technical knowledge exchange.

Clearly, both countries want to build a long-term agricultural partnership. This first shipment proves that Egypt can deliver high-quality agricultural products to new markets.

El-Mensy confirmed that more potato seed shipments are on the way. Egypt plans to export more to Uzbekistan and possibly other countries in the region. These future exports could help Egypt grow its role in regional food security.
