OWERRI, Imo State — A frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Ejike Chukwu, has declared that he would totally revamp Imo State if elected governor in 2028, noting that he has already developed his policy statements which are quite different from what past and present governors have done.
Chukwu made the declaration on Saturday during an interactive programme with the people of Ohaji/Egbema at the Mmahu Civic Centre, where he addressed newsmen immediately after the event. He hinted that he would stand by the foundation laid by previous governments, describing governance as a continuum.
“I believe that government is a continuum, so if by tomorrow God puts me in power as Governor of Imo State, I will stand by the foundation that has been laid by previous governors, especially Governor Hope Uzodinma, because he has done some strong road infrastructures. But if he has done five, I will do ten. Whenever someone has done well, you stand on what he had done to do better than saying that they had not done anything,” Chukwu stated.
The businessman-turned-politician acknowledged that there are a lot of massive infrastructure projects done by the present government, both at the federal and state levels. However, he noted that the only challenge is that there is no connection between the government’s initiatives and the poor masses who are languishing in abject poverty, adding that the government must recognise this reality.
“But if God puts me in charge of Imo, there’ll be a daily record of success and commitment in changing the fortune of the people in infrastructure, human capital development, education, civil service, and security,” he noted. Chukwu also explained that he would create jobs for the teeming unemployed masses by creating substantial room for investments to come into Imo State.
Chukwu further lauded President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hope Uzodinma for their infrastructure achievements, while stressing that his administration would build on these foundations to deliver even greater results for the people of Imo State.
In his address, Austin Okoro, who covered the event, reported that one of the stakeholders from Egbema, Barr Kingsley Ijeoma, raised concerns about injustice in the use of oil resources in Ohaji and Egbema, stating that the revenue being released does not commensurate with what is produced and cannot build roads and other infrastructures. Austin Okoro further noted that the stakeholders called for a more equitable distribution of resources to address the developmental challenges facing the area.
Eze Sylvester Okwodu, the monarch of Obu Oma Dike Autonomous Community, called on the people of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area to fully support their son, Ejike Chukwu, to emerge as Governor of Imo State. According to Austin Okoro, the monarch argued that Chukwu’s presence at the helm of affairs would accelerate even development in the LGA and beyond, and stop the agitation of marginalisation which the people have cried about for years.
Dignitaries who supported the aspiration of Dr Ejike Chukwu included Sir Mike Okiro, former Inspector-General of Police; Rev. Dr J.C. Omaegbu; Dr Uche Mike Chukwuma; Barr Prince Nwakaibea, the Chief Convener; Eze Chadwick Ogor; Eze Lucky Okoro; and all Egbema traditional rulers, Presidents-General, youth leaders, politicians, women leaders, entertainers, and representatives of various communities in Ohaji/Egbema, among others.
The event, which was covered by Austin Okoro, highlighted the growing support for Chukwu’s candidacy across the local government area, with stakeholders expressing confidence in his ability to deliver transformational leadership and address the long-standing developmental challenges facing the state. As the 2028 governorship election approaches, Chukwu’s vision for Imo State has resonated with many who are seeking a new direction for the state.
