The Ekiti State Government has dismissed a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado Ekiti, following the unauthorized removal of a patient’s kidneys. The surgical team involved has been suspended for one month pending further review.
The patient, Joshua Afolayan, visited the hospital after an accident and alleged that one of his functional kidneys was removed during surgery, despite pre-operative tests showing only one kidney was non-functional.
A seven-member government panel, chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, investigated the incident. Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, said the panel confirmed the case was a surgical complication—not organ harvesting for rituals, as initially feared.
Filani stated the government will fund a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and provide post-transplant care for two years. He added that reforms will be implemented to prevent similar incidents and strengthen clinical governance at EKSUTH.
