KADUNA, NIGERIA — Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he will reconsider certain relationships after some friends remained silent during his ongoing trial, adding that his predicament has taught him valuable lessons about life and loyalty.
El-Rufai, who has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission since February 2026, shared his thoughts in a statement posted on his official X handle on Wednesday. He said the experience had opened his eyes to the true nature of some of his relationships and had made him more discerning about the people he surrounds himself with.
“This experience has taught me a lot about life and about people. Some friends have been silent during my trial. I have taken note. When this is over, I will reconsider certain relationships,” El-Rufai wrote.
The former governor said he harboured no bitterness towards those who had distanced themselves from him, noting that he understood that politics and self-preservation often drove people’s actions. He said he had forgiven them and was focused on his own peace and well-being.
“I bear no grudge against anyone. I have forgiven those who abandoned me. But I have also learned lessons that I will never forget. Life is a teacher, and I am a student,” he said.
El-Rufai thanked those who had stood by him, describing them as “true friends and loyal associates.” He said their support had been a source of strength and encouragement, and that he would never forget their kindness.
“I want to thank those who have stood by me, my family, my friends, and my associates. Your support has meant everything to me. I will never forget your loyalty and your kindness. May God bless you abundantly,” he wrote.
The former governor, who is facing trial over alleged money laundering and conversion of public property, has consistently denied the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and an attempt to tarnish his reputation. He said he was confident that the truth would prevail and that he would be vindicated.
“I am innocent of all the allegations against me. I have faith in God and in the justice system. I am confident that the truth will prevail and that I will be vindicated,” he said.
El-Rufai also reflected on the transient nature of political power and the importance of staying true to one’s principles. He said his current situation had reinforced his belief in the importance of integrity, courage, and faith.
“Power is transient. What matters is the legacy you leave behind and the principles you stand for. I have always stood for what I believe is right, and I will continue to do so, no matter the circumstances,” he said.
His statement has resonated with many Nigerians, who have taken to social media to express their support and admiration for his resilience and his message of forgiveness. Some have described him as a “man of courage and principle,” while others have called for a fair and transparent trial.
As El-Rufai’s legal case continues, his focus remains on maintaining his peace and trusting in God. For now, his message is clear: he harbours no bitterness towards those who abandoned him, but he will never forget the lessons he has learned, and he will reconsider certain relationships when his trial is over.
