Emeka Ugwuonye knocks Kanu’s lawyer, Ejiofor over alleged threat to life

Harvard trained attorney and founder of Due Process Advocates International (DPA), Emeka Ugwuonye has berated the legal counsel to the embattled leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor over his alleged plot by the security operatives to eliminate him.

Ejiofor claimed that the assassination plot followed a series of legal victories he had recorded for both Nnamdi Kanu and other detained members of the separatist movement.

While briefing newsmen in Abuja, he also alleged that three of his domestic staff, Felix Okonkwo (driver), Okafor Lawrence Ugochukwu (gardener), and Ikenna Chibuike (steward), have been in custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, since June 6, 2021.

He said that they were ferried away when security agents stormed his ancestral home in Umuanakwa Ifite, Oraifite, in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, in an operation he said led to the death of his elder brother, Mr. Joel Ejiofor’s Personal Assistant, Mr. Samuel Okoro.

However, Ugwuonye in a statement he sent to Newsband, faulted Ejiofor’s claim. He wondered why Ejiofor who filed lawsuits for himself against DSS and “won” can’t do the same for his staff who have been in DSS custody since the invasion of his home.

The human rights lawyer further noted that the fact that Ejiofor believes the DSS is after his life means he cannot continue to represent a man in the custody of DSS and who is being prosecuted by the secret police.

According to Ugwuonye, a doctor cannot be allowed to continue to treat a patient if the doctor has contacted the same disease.

The statement reads, “Clearly, Ejiofor is whipping up sentiments. He filed lawsuits for himself against DSS and “won”. But why has he not filed for his staff that have been in DSS detention. Or is it that he trusts the court only when he is the one making a claim? It is faster for the court to deal with detention of a person than to deal with damage to a house. Let Ejiofor apply to court for the release of his staff.

“Now, you see why I said there is a conflict of interest in Ejiofor’s continued representation of Nnamdi Kanu. The fact that he believes the DSS is after his life means he cannot continue to represent a man in custody of DSS and who is being prosecuted by DSS. Many of our people are totally ignorant. That is why they don’t understand this. A doctor cannot be allowed to continue to treat a patient if the doctor has contacted the same disease. He and the patient can reinfect each other. And of course, if the doctor is running short on supplies, he may withhold medication for his own cure. It is common sense.

“It is now not clear whether the DSS are extending to Ejiofor their hatred for Nnamdi Kanu or whether they are extending to Nnamdi their hatred for Ejiofor. I am surprised that the other lawyers in this case are not able to face up to this fact, that the longer Ejiofor remains a lawyer for Nnamdi Kanu in his criminal trial, the more the case is compromised.

“It is either that Ejiofor is lying or he should recuse himself from the case of Nnamdi Kanu”
