Emmanuel Kunde, Cameroonian football legend, dies at 68

The football fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its most revered figures, Emmanuel Kunde, who tragically passed away on May 16, 2025, at the age of 68.
Kunde, a legendary centre-back, left behind a legacy that helped shape African football across two golden decades.
Cameroon Football Association president and African football icon Samuel Eto’o paid a heartfelt tribute to Kunde on Facebook, expressing his sorrow with sad face emojis.
Eto’o’s post reflected the high regard in which Kunde was held by his peers and fans alike.
UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana also expressed deep shock at the news, describing Kunde as a footballer whose game intelligence and physicality made life miserable for even the most clinical strikers.
Kunde’s illustrious career was marked by numerous achievements, including instrumental roles in Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations triumphs in 1984 and 1988.
He represented his country at the 1982 and 1990 FIFA World Cups, with the latter tournament marking Cameroon’s historic run to the quarter-finals, a first for an African nation.
Kunde remains Cameroon’s fifth-most-capped player and is among their top 10 goal scorers, a rare feat for a defender.
Early Life and Career
Born on July 15, 1956, Kunde began his football journey at Mbankomo FC before featuring for clubs such as Tempête de Nanga-Eboko FC, Canon Yaoundé, and Olympic Mvolyé.
After retiring from active play, Kunde transitioned into management, leading teams including PWD Bamenda, Canon Yaoundé, and US Bitam across two spells.
Cause of Death
While the cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, reports suggest he died in his sleep on May 15, 2025.
His remains have been deposited at the Yaoundé Central Hospital mortuary, pending further announcements from the family.
