England appoints Lee Carsley as interim head coach
The English Football Association (FA) has appointed Lee Carsley as the national team interim coach ahead of their Nations League campaign which begins next month.
Before now, Mr Carsley has been managing England Under-21s since 2021, and led them to the European Under-21 Championship title in 2023.
Although he was originally born in Birmingham, Carsley represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career through his grandmother, who is from County Cork.
However, Carlsey turned down an offer to manage the Republic of Ireland national team in March.
The former defensive midfielder plied his football trade in England, with stints at clubs including Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Everton
England FA said the 50 year old tactician will initially manage the national team for their September fixtures, but with a view to staying on throughout the autumn while they continue the hunt for a permanent manager.
He is taking charge of the senior side after Gareth Southgate resigned last month after almost eight years as manager following England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final to Spain.
“It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis,” Carsley said in a statement.
“As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while The FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.”
