Enugu breaks transport record with CNG buses, mega terminals launch
DDM News

(DDM) – Enugu State will on Thursday, August 14, 2025, witness a major leap in its urban mobility and transportation infrastructure as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah prepares to officially launch the state’s new Transport Management System and commission five newly built modern bus terminals.
The commissioning, scheduled to take place in Holy Ghost, Nsukka, Abakpa, and Gariki, marks one of the most ambitious public transport projects in the state’s history.
In addition to the terminals, the governor will also roll out a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses aimed at providing safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly travel for residents.
DDM gathered that this initiative is part of the Mbah administration’s “Tomorrow is Here” agenda, which prioritizes modern infrastructure, urban renewal, and sustainable development.
The Transport Management System is expected to integrate road safety measures, structured ticketing, and real-time passenger information to ensure efficiency, safety, and comfort.
Officials say the five ultra-modern bus terminals will serve as central hubs for public transport, reducing congestion in the city center and improving commuter experience.
Each terminal is equipped with digital ticketing booths, waiting lounges, surveillance cameras, and traffic coordination units, all aimed at bringing Enugu’s public transportation standards closer to global benchmarks.
The choice of CNG buses aligns with the Nigerian government’s national push toward cleaner and cheaper alternative fuels.
CNG-powered buses produce fewer emissions compared to diesel or petrol engines, making them both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
Transport experts say this move could reduce operational costs, extend vehicle lifespans, and cut harmful emissions by up to 25%.
Speaking ahead of the launch, a senior official in the state’s Ministry of Transport said the initiative is designed not only to modernize the sector but also to create jobs for drivers, terminal staff, and maintenance personnel.
“With the integration of the Transport Management System, we will have better control over routes, schedules, and safety compliance.
The CNG buses are also a bold statement about our commitment to green energy,” the official stated.
Governor Mbah, who has made infrastructural renewal a cornerstone of his governance, is expected to highlight how the project ties into broader plans to make Enugu an economic hub in the South-East region.
Observers believe the transport reform will boost local commerce, attract investors, and enhance the state’s tourism appeal by providing reliable and orderly transport services.
Residents of Enugu have expressed optimism, noting that the new system could reduce travel times, improve safety, and restore order to the often chaotic urban transport scene.
The launch will be attended by top government officials, transport union leaders, and community representatives, with a public display of the new CNG buses and a live demonstration of the ticketing system.
The Enugu State government has urged residents to participate actively in the unveiling ceremony, describing it as a landmark achievement in the state’s journey toward modernization.
