The Enugu State Government has confirmed an outbreak of Rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area and is urging residents to be careful.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Patrick Ubru, said rabies is a dangerous viral disease that affects both animals and humans, mostly spread through bites from infected dogs.
He warned that once symptoms start showing, the disease is almost always fatal.
To stop the spread, the government has asked dog owners to vaccinate their pets immediately and keep them from roaming around freely. Residents were also advised to stay away from stray or unfamiliar animals.
Anyone who is bitten or scratched by an animal should quickly wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 10 minutes and go to the nearest hospital without delay.
The government also told residents to report animals showing unusual behaviour, such as aggression, too much saliva, or paralysis, to veterinary authorities.
Officials say they are already working to contain the situation and have called on community leaders to help spread awareness, stressing that public cooperation is key to preventing deaths.
