Equatorial Guinea Captain Emilio Nsue Satisfied Over Draw Against Nigeria in AFCON 2024 Opener

Following the 1-1 draw between Equatorial Guinea and the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the opening match of AFCON 2023, Equatorial Guinea’s captain, Emilio Nsue, shared his sentiments on the game.

The encounter at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium saw Nsue’s team earn a point, but he expressed a mix of satisfaction with the point and disappointment with the overall performance.

Nsue highlighted their strong first-half performance but acknowledged the need to address mistakes. Despite taking the lead with Iban Salvador’s goal, Equatorial Guinea faced a swift equalizer from Napoli forward Victor Osimhen.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s superiority, Nsue emphasized the importance of improvement for the upcoming matches. He stated, “For us here, we are happy for the point; we are not happy for the performance. [So], we have to look [at] the next game. For us, it [the next game] is the most important one.”

Responding to the question of whether a 2-1 scoreline would have been preferable, Nsue noted that both teams had chances but expressed contentment with the point, not the performance.

When asked about Equatorial Guinea’s aspirations in the tournament, especially against a talented Nigerian squad, Nsue laughed off the idea of competing for the AFCON trophy. He emphasized a game-by-game approach and the team’s focus on improvement throughout the tournament.
