Eritrea bans Ethiopian Airlines over “multiple passengers’ luggage theft”

Published

on

The Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority has announced the suspension of all Ethiopian Airlines flights to and from Eritrea, effective September 30.

The decision comes after repeated allegations of “consistent and persistent malicious trading practices” and “systemic and organized passengers’ luggage theft, pilferage, damage, prolonged delays, and loss with no compensation” by the airline.

According to a letter circulating online, purportedly written by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority, the suspension is a result of Ethiopian Airlines‘ failure to rectify the issues despite repeated calls to do so.

The letter accuses the airline of engaging in “unjustified and unwarranted price hikes and other irregularities” that have negatively impacted passengers.

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed receiving the notice from Eritrean officials and has expressed commitment to resolving the issues amicably and promptly.

However, the airline has not yet provided a detailed response to the allegations.

The suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea is a significant development, given the airline’s status as the largest in Africa by revenue and profit.

The airline resumed flights to Asmara in July 2018, following the normalization of relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, Diaspora Digital Media understands.

Passengers planning to travel to Eritrea with Ethiopian Airlines have been advised to adjust their plans, as the suspension takes effect on September 30.

Turkish, Saudi, and Egyptian airlines operate regular flights to Eritrea, providing alternative options for travelers.

The move by Eritrea’s Civil Aviation Authority highlights the need for airlines to prioritize passenger satisfaction and adhere to international standards of service.
