Erosion Menace: Reps to Intervene in Nnewi Constituency
The House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 adopted a motion urging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to urgently intervene and address the menace of erosion in two communities in Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo local government areas of Anambra state.
This followed a motion to that effect by Representative Chris Azubogu, Representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives of the 8th Assembly of the National Assembly.
Azubogu in the motion presented on the floor of the house drew the attention of the House to what he described as “prevalence of gully erosion” in some communities in Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas. He said that the erosion has continued to wreck a lot of havoc on the affected communities leading to loss of lives, properties and farmlands and has gone beyond the control of local and state authorities.
The motion reads in part;” Aware that erosion has continued to wreak severe havoc in the Federal constituency leading to several losses of lives, properties worth millions of naira and farmlands to the ravaging erosion.
“Worried that this has become the reality in almost all the communities in the Constituency as some family homes have been swept off and some at the verge of been swept off. Some of these families include the families of Mr. Simeon Adibe, Mathias Ajuluchukwu, Emeka Ovio Ajuluchukwu, Chief Henry Asomugha Late Pius Okoli Family and Late Samuel Akaegbobi Family etc all in Ukpor Nnewi South L.G.A, the families of Jerome Uchendu, Mr. Simon Akabogu, the Onwuzuluigbo family, Ofomata family, Enemuo family Muojekwu family Udeagbala family in Ekwusigo L.G.A., the family of Rtd Asp Christopher Onyejegbu, Onwuagba Okwu family, Ofiaeli family in Nnewi North L.G.A and so many others.
“Regrets that even some public institutions within the Federal Constituency like Nnewi Magistrate Court, Central Police Station Nnewi, Chikason Manufacturing Company that has over 1000 employees are at the verge of being washed away if nothing is done urgently to check this trend.
“Cognizant that the enormity of the devastation has put the menace beyond the capacity of the Local and State governments. Hence the need for national intervention.
“Piqued by the fact that except a sustainable national strategy is developed and adopted for the containment of the menace, the Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency will continue to lose so much resource as industries, lives and farmlands will continue to be washed away.”
The motion resolved to call on the House to make funds available in the 2016 budget to tackle the disaster.
The Motion on adoption was referred to the House Committee on Environment for appropriate actions by the Speaker; Rt.Hon. Yakubu Dogara.
