The European Union has imposed stricter border controls on imports of arachidonic acid oil from China, after the ingredient was identified as the likely source of a major contamination scare affecting infant formula.
The toxin cereulide, which can cause nausea and diarrhea, was first detected in December in formula batches containing the oil, prompting recalls in more than 60 countries.
French authorities are investigating the deaths of three infants suspected to be linked to the contaminated formula.
According to the EU’s Official Journal, all consignments entering the bloc from China must now be accompanied by an official certificate confirming they are free from cereulide toxin.
Additionally, for the next two months, 50% of shipments from China will undergo physical inspections to ensure safety.
Major formula manufacturers, including Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis, have already recalled products containing the affected ingredient.
The European Commission cited follow-up investigations linking the contamination directly to arachidonic acid oil imported from China, describing it as a “serious risk for human health.”
While no company was officially named, Cabio Biotech has been identified as a potential supplier of the tainted ingredient.
This move underscores the EU’s commitment to safeguarding infant health and preventing further exposure to contaminated food products.
