Evans Has Revolutionised Kidnapping ~IGP; Seeks Death Sentence

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has said that billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a Evans, deserves death sentence.

Speaking on Friday during an interactive session with Civil Society Organisations [CSOs] in Abuja, he said Evans should be used to set an example to youths on risk inherent in crimes.

He lamented that for collecting $1million ransom on six different occasions, Evans “has changed the face of kidnapping in this country”.

The IGP said that it is enough impetus to lure some youths into the illegal business of kidnapping.

He, therefore, expressed urgent need to review existing laws on kidnapping to ensure death sentence for the perpetrators.

Citing that a total of 2000 kidnap suspects are currently in police custody, he said that the least punishment for kidnappers should be life imprisonment.

“Imagine the case at hand, talking about Evans,” IGP Idris noted, “he told his boys not to have landed property in either Anambra or Imo because he was aware the houses will be demolished and the boys ostracized if caught.

“He refused to own any property in his place. You know, in that part of the country, even in churches, relatives of kidnap suspects are avoided and treated as outcasts by people.

“That was why he refused to invest in his own state and preferred to build houses in Ghana and other places. This was because he knew his Investments would be lost.

“So the issue of punishment is very important. “Evans has undoubtedly changed the face of kidnapping in this country, if you see his magnification mansions in Ghana.”

On an earlier occasion, the Inspector General of Police attributed the arrest Evans to information sharing and intelligence cooperation among police services in West Africa.

“Information sharing is crucial to tackling the menace of trans-border crimes in West Africa.

“It is through such exchange that we were able to nab a Ghanaian/Nigerian kidnapper two weeks ago, after evading arrest for many years.

“For several years, Evans terrorised Nigerians and nationals of many countries across West Africa. Efforts to apprehend him did not yield the desired results until we spread our search net wider,” he said.

The police chief, therefore, solicited closer ties among security agencies in the sub-region.

He emphasised the need to improve the method of monitoring and surveillance, particularly among border and coastal police units.
