OSOGBO, Nigeria — A former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to shun violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, warning that acts of political violence could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
Oyintiloye made the appeal as political activities intensify across the state ahead of the governorship poll, with major political parties mobilising supporters and intensifying campaigns in different parts of Osun.
The former lawmaker urged political actors to prioritise peace and ensure that their supporters do not engage in actions capable of threatening public safety or disrupting the election. He stressed that the interest of the state should take precedence over individual political ambitions.
According to him, elections should provide citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their preferred leaders without intimidation, threats or physical confrontation. He therefore called on candidates and party leaders to caution their supporters against provocative statements and actions that could escalate tensions.
Oyintiloye also urged security agencies and relevant electoral authorities to remain vigilant before, during and after the election. He said adequate security arrangements were necessary to protect voters, electoral officials, political party agents and other stakeholders participating in the exercise.
The former lawmaker noted that political parties have an important responsibility to promote peaceful participation among their members and supporters. He urged party leaders to use their influence to discourage acts of violence and ensure that campaign activities remained within the bounds of the law.
He further appealed to voters to exercise their franchise peacefully and resist attempts by individuals or groups to use them to cause disorder during the election. According to him, the people of Osun should be allowed to make their choice without fear or coercion.
The August 15 governorship election is expected to attract significant political attention, with competing parties seeking to secure the support of voters across the state’s local government areas.
Oyintiloye said the outcome of the election should be determined by the votes cast by eligible citizens rather than violence or intimidation. He maintained that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and democratic channels.
The former legislator also called on traditional leaders, religious organisations, civil society groups and other community stakeholders to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace throughout the electoral period.
He stressed that protecting lives and property should remain a collective responsibility and urged all stakeholders to avoid actions capable of creating unnecessary tension in communities.
As the election draws closer, Oyintiloye’s warning adds to calls from political and civic stakeholders for a peaceful electoral process in Osun State. He urged all contestants to accept the outcome of the election through established legal channels and ensure that the democratic process is allowed to function without violence or intimidation.
