Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, a former adult film performer better known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has officially taken office as a senator in Colombia after securing a seat in the country’s March general election.

Omaña will represent the Norte de Santander region under the left-wing Historic Pact coalition during the 2026–2030 legislative term.

According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, she entered the Senate after placing 23rd on the coalition’s closed party list. The Historic Pact emerged as the largest bloc in the Senate elections, winning more than 4.4 million votes, or 22.72 per cent of the total ballots cast, to secure 25 seats.

Before entering the adult entertainment industry, Omaña worked as a journalist. She has consistently argued that her previous career should not be used to judge her ability to serve in public office.

She has also advocated for greater recognition and protection of women who have worked in the sex industry, saying they deserve equal rights and opportunities rather than discrimination.

Responding to critics who questioned her suitability for public office, Omaña said in a TikTok video: “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?”

The senator, who hails from the city of Cúcuta, said her legislative priorities will include expanding mental health services and strengthening measures to combat sexual abuse.

Her election has drawn widespread attention in Colombia, partly because she had previously been appointed, alongside former adult performer Juan Carlos Florián, to a deputy ministerial position in the Ministry of Equality under President Gustavo Petro’s administration.

Omaña’s arrival in the Senate has sparked renewed debate about representation, social stigma and whether a politician’s personal history should determine their fitness for public office.
