Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, believes serving governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) won’t be re-elected in 2027 due to the party’s poor performance and alleged marginalization of the North.

According to Lawal, the APC’s failure to deliver on its promises and its perceived anti-North agenda will make it difficult for northern elected officials, including governors, to win re-election on the party’s platform.

Lawal stated that the APC has destroyed and marginalized the North, leading to a loss of confidence among northern voters.

He suggested that northern governors and elected officials might need to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to secure re-election, citing the party’s potential to deliver better governance.

Lawal echoed Rabiu Kwankwaso’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, alleging deliberate neglect of northern Nigeria in terms of infrastructure development.

Lawal’s comments imply a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with potential defections from APC to ADC .

Lawal’s assertions have sparked reactions, with some defending the APC’s achievements and others questioning the party’s viability in the North.

The outcome of the 2027 elections will likely depend on various factors, including party performances, candidate popularity, and voter turnout.

Babachir Lawal spoke after Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the national publicity secretary of the ADC, revealed that serving governors are facing intimidation from Tinubu’s government, therefore preventing them from defecting to other political parties including Atiku ADC coalition.

“No serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing.”
