Nigeria’s Falconets have marched into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after producing a confident and disciplined 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 encounter in Poland on Thursday.
The Nigerian youngsters combined attacking efficiency with defensive resilience to put the Young Lionesses under pressure and secure one of their most important victories of the tournament at the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała.
Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu were the goalscorers as the Falconets scored once in the first half and twice after the interval to seal a convincing knockout-stage victory.
Rafiu Gives Nigeria Early Advantage
Nigeria wasted little time making their presence felt as Rafiu opened the scoring in the eighth minute.
The forward’s early strike gave the Falconets a 1-0 lead and immediately placed England under pressure in a match where there was no room for either side to recover from a poor start.
England tried to respond and gradually created opportunities of their own, but Nigeria’s defensive organisation prevented the Young Lionesses from finding an equaliser.
The biggest moment of danger for the Falconets came when England were awarded a penalty during the first half.
Rachel Maltby stepped up from the spot with an opportunity to bring England level, but Nigeria captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma stood firm and saved the penalty.
The intervention was crucial because it allowed Nigeria to retain their one-goal advantage going into the break. Rather than allowing England to regain momentum, Uzoma’s save gave the Falconets an important psychological boost as they headed into half-time 1-0 ahead.
Akekoromowei Doubles the Lead
Nigeria began the second half in exactly the same manner they had started the first, with attacking intent and a determination to increase their advantage.
Only two minutes after the restart, Akekoromowei found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The goal, which came in the 47th minute, gave Nigeria breathing space and left England facing a much more difficult task in their attempt to stay alive in the tournament.
With a two-goal cushion, the Falconets became increasingly comfortable in the contest. England needed a response, but Nigeria remained disciplined and continued to protect their advantage while looking for opportunities to punish their opponents on the break.
Mamudu Seals Comprehensive Victory
The decisive moment arrived in the 73rd minute when substitute Mary Mamudu completed the scoring.
Mamudu’s goal made it 3-0 and effectively ended England’s hopes of producing a late comeback.
Nigeria saw out the remaining minutes without allowing the Young Lionesses to find a way back into the match, completing a 3-0 victory and securing their place among the final eight teams at the tournament.
The result was particularly significant because it showed the Falconets could combine their attacking firepower with defensive discipline against a strong European opponent.
From Difficult Start to Quarter-Final Qualification
Nigeria’s journey to the knockout stage had not been straightforward.
The Falconets opened their Group F campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China. Their qualification hopes were therefore placed under considerable pressure heading into their final group match.
However, the Nigerian side responded emphatically by defeating New Caledonia 10-1.
That huge victory helped secure second place in Group F and set up the Round of 16 meeting with England.
The 3-0 victory over England means Nigeria have now scored 13 goals across their last two matches, following the 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia.
Overall, the Falconets have recorded two victories, one draw and one defeat in their four matches at the tournament, while their latest success also delivered another clean sheet.
Falconets Keep World Title Dream Alive
Nigeria’s progress into the quarter-finals also keeps alive their long-standing ambition of winning the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
The Falconets have been regular participants in the competition and have twice reached the final, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014.
They now have another opportunity to go further in Poland, with coach Moses Aduku’s team continuing their campaign among the tournament’s remaining eight sides.
The victory over England also means Nigeria remain the only African team to progress this far at the 2026 tournament after the other African representatives failed to advance from the group stage.
For England, the defeat brings their campaign to an end, while Nigeria can now turn their attention to the quarter-finals.
The Falconets will await their next opponent as the tournament moves into its decisive stages, with the Nigerian team hoping their impressive momentum can carry them all the way to the final.
For now, however, the message from Bielsko-Biała is clear: Nigeria are through to the last eight, and they did it in style.
