The Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day, marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting the principles of rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
He also assured Nigerians that the ministry, in collaboration with security agencies, would continue to implement measures aimed at maintaining peace and strengthening internal security across the country.
The minister stressed that a secure and stable environment remains essential for democratic growth and national development.
He urged citizens to use the occasion as a time for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and their role in sustaining it.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, support the institutions that uphold our democracy, and recognise that the strength of any democratic society ultimately depends on the character and commitment of its citizens,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo noted that June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, sacrifices and resilience of those who fought for democratic governance.
“Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today, and their legacy continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” he added. :::
