The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024.
In a statement on Wednesday, the image maker of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Caroline Embu, said the increment aligns with the recent changes to the National Minimum Wage.
Embu quoted a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024 and signed by the Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Previously, NYSC members received a monthly stipend of N33,000, a figure that was introduced after the national minimum wage was raised to N30,000 in 2019.
Meanwhile, the latest adjustment follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, which set the new minimum wage at N70,000.
However, this increase in corps members’ allowances reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of youth serving the nation and comes as a welcome relief amidst the rising cost of living in the country.
