FG Issues Urgent Update on Nigerians in Iran—What You Need to Know

The Federal Government of Nigeria has moved to reassure its citizens residing in Iran that their safety and welfare remain a top priority, following recent reports of unrest and heightened security concerns in the region.
The assurance came through a formal statement released on Friday, June 27, by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), via its Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit in Abuja.
According to the statement, no Nigerian citizens have been harmed or injured during the period of instability, and all are accounted for and the government urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation.
The Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, emphasized the federal government’s “unwavering commitment” to the safety of all Nigerians abroad.
“We remain committed to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians in the diaspora, especially during times of crisis,” she said.
NiDCOM commended the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran for its proactive response to the security situation.
Among the measures taken were the temporary relocation of consular operations to neighboring Armenia, and the movement of Nigerian residents to designated safe zones in Shomal, Qom, and Gazvin, in preparation for a possible evacuation if needed.
A representative from the embassy confirmed that normalcy has now returned to previously affected areas, and all Nigerian nationals remain safe and stable.
In the same statement, the embassy addressed a viral video featuring a Nigerian man making unverified and alarming claims about conditions in Iran.
The embassy clarified that the individual had a criminal record, including charges of human trafficking and drug-related offenses, for which he was previously imprisoned in Iran.
Despite a standing deportation order, the man had refused to return to Nigeria until the recent unrest occurred.
“Our responsibility extends to all Nigerians, regardless of their situation,” the embassy said.
“While we do not condone unlawful behavior, we acted out of national duty and concern for human dignity.”
NiDCOM urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to rely on verified information from official channels and warned against the dangers of spreading false or sensational narratives online.
The Federal Government reiterated its readiness to intervene, evacuate, and support Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world during emergencies.
