FG launches subsidized rice sale at ₦40,000 per 50kg bag for civil servants

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Sokoto State civil servants at a subsidized rate of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that this initiative was officially unveiled on Thursday at the Cabinet Office in Sokoto, where the Sokoto State Head of Service, Alhaji Sulaiman Fulani, supervised the event.

Fulani urged civil servants to follow the process responsibly when purchasing the rice.

He explained that individuals looking to buy the rice would need to provide a code number to obtain a treasury receipt, serving as proof of payment.

Once the payment is confirmed, they will be given a collection receipt that specifies the time and place for pickup.

Fulani also took a moment to thank Governor Ahmed Aliyu for making Sokoto one of the first states to benefit from this Federal Government program, aimed at tackling the food crisis currently affecting Nigeria.

Bello Muhammed, a Federal Government representative and chairman of the exercise in Sokoto, highlighted that the rice would be sold on a “one person, one bag” basis to avoid hoarding and ensure equal access to all beneficiaries.

“Each buyer will need to present their National Identification Number and an active ATM card with ₦40,000 for payment,” said Muhammed.

The distribution of the rice will be carried out using 33 trucks, which will deliver a total of 19,800 bags.

Of these, 65% (12,870 bags) will be allocated to state civil servants, while the remaining portion will be distributed to federal workers and private sector employees.

Prominent dignitaries at the event included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar Alkali; Sokoto SEMA Special Adviser, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga; SEMA Executive Secretary, Bashir Muhammad; and SEMA Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Mustapha Umar, among others.

This rice initiative aims to provide much-needed relief to civil servants and other eligible recipients in Sokoto as food prices across Nigeria continue to rise.

By offering this subsidized rice, the Federal Government seeks to address the mounting food insecurity and provide an essential support system to its citizens in difficult times.
