On January 16, 2025, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, addressed recent comments made by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The Emir had spoken about the economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration during a public event in Lagos.
The Emir recognized the government’s initiatives but declared he would withdraw support due to his personal interests.
The Minister while responding to Sanusi’s remarks in a statement, asserted that every Nigerian, including Sanusi, possesses the right to voice opinions on government actions, both favorable and unfavorable.
However, Idris found it disconcerting that a leader from a respected institution would publicly admit to withholding truth for personal reasons. He stated, “It is amusing that a leader would shuffle off telling the truth because of imaginary antagonism.”
The Minister highlighted that Nigeria is at a critical juncture requiring bold actions to address economic challenges. He noted that the government implemented transformative reforms not for ease but for the country’s long-term stability and growth.
Idris pointed out that the temporary pains resulting from these reforms are a “necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management.” He reiterated that these changes are already producing measurable progress.
For instance, the unification of exchange rates has significantly boosted investor confidence. This improvement has led to increased foreign reserves, enhancing Nigeria’s resilience against external economic shocks.
The removal of the fuel subsidy has liberated resources for crucial investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Reputable institutions, like the World Bank, project Nigeria’s GDP will rise, confirming the economy’s recovery journey.
Idris voiced disappointment over essential reforms, once praised by global experts including Emir Sanusi, now facing subtle criticism due to shifting loyalties.
He urged the Emir to contribute constructively rather than undermine efforts aimed at collective progress.
Moreover, the Minister called on the Emir to prioritize the greater good of Nigerians over personal interests. He stated, “Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders.”
The government encourages esteemed leaders to avoid rhetoric that undermines public trust. Instead, they should champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria.
Idris concluded by emphasizing that this is a critical time for the nation. He called for collaboration over distractions, asserting that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to economic inclusivity and shared prosperity.
Finally, he expressed hope that history would record this moment as a turning point. “Together, we will deliver on the promise of renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all,” he affirmed.
