FG Partners UK University To Launch International Degrees In Nigeria

(DDM) – The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured a strategic partnership with Coventry University in the United Kingdom to establish a campus in Nigeria that will deliver internationally recognised British degrees to students within the country.

The initiative is being implemented under a Transnational Education (TNE) arrangement designed to expand access to global-standard higher education while reducing the financial burden associated with studying abroad.

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development in a statement released Wednesday in Abuja through the Federal Ministry of Education.

The statement was issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Folasade Boriowo.

According to the minister, discussions leading to the agreement took place during his visit to the United Kingdom where he accompanied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on official engagements.

Alausa explained that the visit created an opportunity to meet with leaders of British universities, international investors and development partners to advance the initiative.

He stated that the proposed campus will be located in Alaro City in Lagos State, an emerging industrial and technology hub designed to attract international investment and innovation.

The campus is expected to offer both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in critical academic fields including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM).

Other programmes will include business-related courses as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes aimed at improving workforce skills.

Officials say the academic qualifications obtained through the programme will be fully equivalent to those awarded to students studying directly at Coventry University in the United Kingdom.

Admissions for the first group of students are expected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, depending on the completion of regulatory approvals from relevant Nigerian education authorities.

The minister explained that the initiative is designed to widen access to world-class education for Nigerian students while lowering the overall cost of obtaining an international degree.

Education experts note that transnational education arrangements allow students to receive foreign university qualifications while studying in their home countries.

Such programmes have gained global popularity because they reduce the cost of travel, accommodation and foreign tuition fees that many students face when studying abroad.

Nigeria has remained one of the largest sources of international students studying in the United Kingdom, with thousands enrolling in British universities every year.

However, the rising cost of overseas education has made it increasingly difficult for many Nigerian families to afford foreign university programmes.

By establishing a branch campus locally, policymakers believe Nigerian students will be able to access the same quality of education without leaving the country.

Dr. Alausa said the partnership also aims to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system by producing graduates equipped with modern skills required in the global economy.

He added that the collaboration demonstrates the government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria into a hub for knowledge, innovation and skills development.

The minister further explained that the initiative is supported by the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, reflecting growing educational cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Education analysts say similar international campus partnerships have helped several countries expand their influence in global higher education.

Countries such as Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore have successfully attracted international universities to establish campuses within their borders.

If successfully implemented, the new Coventry University campus in Lagos could also attract students from across Africa seeking internationally accredited degrees.

Government officials believe the project could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s education sector while improving graduate employability and technical capacity in key industries.
