FG Rehabilitates Over 300 Repentant Terrorists While Nigerians Starve

More than 300 repentant terrorists are currently receiving rehabilitation at a federal centre in Gombe State.

The Nigerian government revealed this on Thursday, August 7, as part of its efforts to reintegrate ex-combatants using non-military strategies.

Major-General Adamu Laka, who coordinates the National Counter Terrorism Centre, disclosed the update during a stakeholders and donors’ meeting in Abuja.

He explained that Operation Safe Corridor in Mallam Sidi, Gombe, has already graduated over 2,600 low-risk former fighters.

The programme offers psychosocial support, vocational training, and reintegration aid. Over 300 individuals are now enrolled in the same process.

Laka said more terrorists and bandits are also showing interest in surrendering, especially in Nigeria’s North West and North Central regions.

The government is now planning new disarmament and reintegration programmes specifically designed for these zones.

However, Laka raised concerns about what happens after reintegration. He warned that many former combatants face joblessness and uncertainty, which could undo the progress made.

He stressed that economic stability is vital to prevent a return to violence.

To address this, the government is partnering with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture on a new agribusiness initiative.

The project will provide land, farming inputs, training, mentorship, and access to markets. It will also benefit widows and people in conflict-hit communities.

“This kind of empowerment is key to long-term peace,” Laka said. “When people have work, they have hope. That’s how you stop violence from returning.”

Dr. Abdoulaye Tahirau, Deputy Director-General at IITA, praised the initiative.

He called it “a pathway to inclusive peace” and said it would boost agricultural productivity among those affected by conflict.
