The Federal Government has released eight months’ arrears of the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) owed workers in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The payment covers arrears from January to August 2026 and comes days after non-academic workers issued an ultimatum over the outstanding allowance.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the release on Wednesday, saying the payment was part of efforts to address workers’ welfare and prevent disruptions to academic activities.

Alausa said the payment recognised the important role played by non-academic staff in keeping tertiary institutions running.

He added that clearing the arrears would support industrial harmony and reduce the risk of disruptions across the country’s tertiary institutions.

The minister said the government would continue discussions with relevant unions, heads of institutions and other stakeholders to resolve remaining issues affecting workers.

He urged academic and non-academic staff, unions and institutional authorities to continue cooperating with the government as efforts to address welfare concerns continue.
