FG. Scrambles to Save Nigerians Trapped in Central African Republic

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to rescue and bring back home a group of Nigerian workers reportedly stranded in the Central African Republic (CAR).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this followed the circulation of a distressing video on social media.
The video, which quickly went viral, depicted the abandoned workers in dire conditions in the Bambari region.
The region is a remote area situated approximately 850 kilometers from the capital city, Bangui.
In response to the growing public concern, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Friday from Abuja.
The statement confirms that the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui has successfully made contact with the stranded individuals.
The embassy is currently working closely with local authorities in CAR to guarantee the well-being, protection, and timely return of the affected nationals.
According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Embassy of Nigeria has mobilized efforts to ensure that the stranded workers are safe and arrangements are underway for their repatriation.
Ebienfa noted that officials at the Nigerian Mission have been in active communication with the victims and are collaborating with local government entities to expedite the evacuation process.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seriously concerned about the safety and general welfare of Nigerian citizens who are currently stranded in the Central African Republic.
The video, which has garnered significant attention on social media platforms, showed the condition of these Nigerians left behind in Bambari by their employers and agents,” the statement read.
Providing an update on the rescue efforts, the Ministry stated that the victims’ passports, which had previously been seized, have now been recovered.
Additionally, a vehicle has been dispatched from the capital to transport them safely from Bambari to Bangui.
The journey, due to the security situation in the area, is expected to be conducted under military escort, with their arrival in Bangui projected for Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Further discussions are being held with the workers’ employer regarding temporary accommodation and support while the individuals await repatriation.
The Embassy is also coordinating logistics and engaging with the relevant agencies to facilitate their return to Nigeria as soon as possible.
“The Nigerian Mission in Bangui has taken proactive steps by sending transport to bring the affected individuals from Bambari.
Once in the capital, their immediate needs will be addressed, and arrangements will be made for their safe journey back to Nigeria.
Talks with the employer are also ongoing to ensure that the workers are properly sheltered and cared for during this transition,” the Ministry added.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens abroad, the Ministry used the opportunity to advise Nigerians.
It urged Nigerians considering employment opportunities outside the country to thoroughly investigate prospective employers and ensure that all travel documentation is in place before departure.
“The Federal Government remains fully dedicated to upholding the dignity and rights of Nigerians across the globe.
“However, it is crucial for those seeking employment abroad to carry out thorough checks on any foreign company or facilitator offering job opportunities.
“Ensuring that all documents are legitimate and complete is essential in avoiding potential exploitation,” the Ministry warned.
Additionally, the Ministry emphasized the importance of registering with Nigerian embassies when working or residing abroad.
This measure, they explained, allows diplomatic missions to respond more effectively in times of crisis or consular emergencies.
“Nigerians living or working in foreign countries are strongly encouraged to register with the Embassy of Nigeria in their respective host countries.
This step is vital in ensuring timely intervention during unexpected incidents,” the statement concluded.
The ongoing rescue operation demonstrates the Federal Government’s readiness to act swiftly in protecting its citizens, particularly in complex and remote regions.
As efforts continue, it is hoped that the safe return of the stranded workers will bring closure to what has been a distressing episode for the individuals involved and their families back home.
