FG Sympathizes With Caribbean Nations After Hurricane Melissa

(DDM) – The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy and unwavering solidarity with the governments and citizens of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica following the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Government described reports of massive flooding, collapsed buildings, disrupted power grids, and rising death tolls as heart-wrenching and tragic.

The Category 4 storm, which hit the Caribbean earlier in the week, brought winds exceeding 150 miles per hour, submerging towns, destroying farmlands, and displacing tens of thousands of residents.

Emergency shelters across Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica are reportedly overwhelmed as humanitarian agencies rush to deliver food, clean water, and medical supplies.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the courage and resilience of local emergency teams and international aid workers battling to contain the impact of the disaster.

It also saluted the governments of the affected countries for their swift response despite infrastructural and logistical challenges.

According to the statement, the Federal Government of Nigeria shares in the pain of the victims and extends heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones.

It also wished the injured a speedy recovery and encouraged affected communities to remain hopeful during the rebuilding process.

In the spirit of South-South cooperation, Nigeria called on African nations, the African Union (AU), and global development partners to rally behind the Caribbean nations through technical, financial, and humanitarian support.

The government emphasized that natural disasters underscore the urgent need for international collaboration on climate resilience and disaster preparedness.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to global humanitarian relief efforts, stressing that solidarity among developing nations remains vital in times of crisis.

Nigeria’s statement further highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Africa and the Caribbean, rooted in shared heritage, struggles, and cooperation.

It pledged that the country stands shoulder to shoulder with the Caribbean as they rebuild homes, restore power, and recover livelihoods destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.

The message concluded with prayers for strength, peace, and swift recovery for the people and governments of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica, as well as a call for international unity in addressing the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable nations.
