FG Urges BUA To Accelerate Sugar Refinery Completion Amid Self-Sufficiency Push

The Federal Government has called on BUA Foods to expedite the completion of its LASUCO sugar refinery, a move aimed at boosting national sugar production.

DDM Correspondent reports that the directive was issued today, December 18, 2025, in Abuja, during a high-level meeting between federal officials and BUA management.

The meeting focused on Nigeria’s strategic goal of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production and reducing reliance on imported sugar.

Government officials emphasized that the timely completion of the LASUCO refinery is critical to meeting the nation’s sugar production targets.

They warned that delays could negatively impact domestic supply, increase import dependence, and raise costs for consumers and local industries.

BUA Foods’ management responded by assuring the government of their commitment to accelerating the construction process.

The company also confirmed plans for operational readiness within the shortest possible timeframe.

Officials noted that Nigeria’s sugar industry is a key component of agricultural and industrial policy, contributing to job creation and economic growth.

The LASUCO refinery, once operational, is expected to significantly increase domestic sugar output and stabilize local market prices.

Experts say that fast-tracking the refinery could reduce the annual importation of sugar, saving the nation billions of naira in foreign exchange.

BUA management highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance supply chain efficiency, machinery installation, and workforce training to meet operational deadlines.

Government representatives reaffirmed their support, stating that public-private collaboration is essential to achieving national sugar self-sufficiency goals.

The meeting also touched on regulatory compliance, environmental standards, and quality assurance to ensure the refinery meets both local and international benchmarks.

Industry analysts say successful completion of the LASUCO refinery will position Nigeria as a leading sugar producer in West Africa.

They also noted that domestic production will strengthen food security and reduce vulnerability to global market fluctuations.

The Federal Government has made clear that it will monitor progress closely and expects monthly updates from BUA on construction milestones.

BUA Foods pledged transparency in reporting progress and emphasized its commitment to delivering a fully operational refinery in record time.

Observers say the accelerated refinery project aligns with broader national policies to promote industrialization and reduce import dependence in key sectors.

The Federal Government expects that with determined implementation, Nigeria will soon achieve substantial self-sufficiency in sugar production, reducing imports and boosting local industry.

The LASUCO refinery’s progress will be closely watched by stakeholders across the nation, with its completion seen as a major milestone in Nigeria’s agricultural industrialization agenda.
